Mr. Venkata Naga Chandrasekhar Cheruvu did his basic MMBBS & MS (Surgery) in India. He trained in the most prestigious Hospitals in UK namely, St Georges Hospital in London & St James hospital in Leeds. Following completion of CCST, he did a Fellowship in Gastric Cancer at National Cancer center (NCC) in Tokyo Japan and Bariatric Fellowships in Melbourne Australia & Liverpool UK. In 2003 Mr. Cheruvu Joined University Hospital North Midlands as Consultant Upper GI & Laparoscopic Surgeon whilst at the same time was appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer Keele University Medical School.
He was instrumental in developing and establishing the regional Oesophago-Gastric cancer center in Stoke and was Cancer Lead Clinician for over 7 years. He simultaneously developed advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and later Started the Bariatric Centre in 2006 at Stoke on Trent, which has now grown into one of the largest Bariatric centers in UK. Mr. Cheruvu had been laparoscopic surgical trainer at the Royal College of Surgeons in London for over a decade and established the Laparoscopic Training unit in Stoke. He has contributed on around 140 presentation's at national and international meetings in addition to over a score of Publications in peer-reviewed journals and has written a book chapter on Oesophageal Emergencies.
Dr. Cheruvu has delivered several invited lectures around the world including the Royal society of Medicine (RSM) invited Lecture. He has performed live televised surgery at international meetings. In addition to being a Lead clinician in cancer and bariatric surgery, Mr. Cheruvu held various positions including, senior lecturer in Keele Medical School, surgical tutor for Royal college of England, programme director North West, Midlands core surgical training, council member Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of UK (ALSGBI) between 2007-2011. He is a current member on British Obesity & Metabolic Surgical society (BOMSS) council and IFSO 2017. Mr. Cheruvu’s conducted 2 major surveys of all UK hospitals and have been published.
In 2009 he was commissioned by ALSGBI to survey the “Laparoscopic Theatres Infrastructure & equipment” of all the 500 UK NHS hospitals which was published in 2011. Later in 2014, he carried out National Bariatric Infrastructure survey of all NHS Bariatric centers on behalf of BOMSS and has published on the BOMSS website. These two studies helped the units to improve their facilities against national recommended set standards. He currently holds a vital position in BOMMS as the BOMSS Industry Lead. He is the Chairman of HCS community in Stoke. A few notable awards were Staffordshire Citizen of the year Award 2005 for innovations in day case surgery service provision and later NHS Heroes Award 2013-14. Rotary International award in 1990. In 2018 Mr. Cheruvu received the House of Commons award in UK Parliament in recognition of his contributions in laparoscopic, bariatric, cancer surgery, training, and for his achievements in both UK and internationally.
