Sustainability Policy
New Vision University recognizes its critical role in shaping a sustainable future and aims to contribute to the Sustainability Agenda.
University shares the definition of Sustainability adopted at Brundtland Commission (1987) – “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
As a higher education institution, NVU embraces its role in fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and supporting economic sustainability. By implementing and embracing sustainability principles, NVU aims to minimize its environmental footprint and enhance the well-being of society.
This Sustainability Policy serves as a guiding framework for university's efforts towards sustainable actions. The policy will evolve over time as the university adapts to emerging challenges and opportunities. The policy represents dedication of the university to address the pressing challenges of climate change, resource depletion and social inequality.
NVU Sustainability Policy is rooted in the following core principles:
• Promoting sustainability through teaching, research and innovation.
NVU is committed to contributing to the development of a more sustainable society through education, research and innovation. All members of the academic staff are encouraged to integrate sustainability-related content into teaching activities where relevant. Students are supported to participate in extracurricular activities that enhance awareness of sustainability issues and deepen their practical experience. NVU commits to conducting and supporting research that advances knowledge, addresses global sustainability challenges and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition, NVU strengthens sustainability education through a dedicated course and related learning activities, and systematically evaluates sustainability literacy among students. The University measures students’ sustainability knowledge, values and competencies using pre- and post-course evaluations, scenario-based assignments and reflective assessments. These findings help to refine teaching methods, improve learning outcomes and ensure that graduates possess the critical skills and understanding needed to promote sustainable development in their future professional and civic roles.
• Environmental sustainability and sustainable operations.
NVU strives to minimise its environmental footprint and model sustainable campus practices. The university targets net-zero carbon emissions for scopes 1 and 2 by 2030, and is working towards defining scope 3 emission targets. NVU invests in renewable energy, promotes efficient use of water and resources, and applies the “avoid-reduce-reuse-recycle” hierarchy to waste management. Procurement, building design and transport policies favour sustainable options, local sourcing and fair-trade practices wherever possible.
• Public outreach.
NVU engages with the local community, secondary schools, industry and civil society to raise awareness of sustainability issues and promote collective action. University-organized events, workshops and campaigns bring together students, staff and the wider public. NVU partners with schools to support student-led sustainability projects and collaborates with business and NGOs to promote sustainable practices and share best-practice frameworks. Through community outreach, NVU contributes to cultural change, capacity building and wider community well-being.
• Social equality and wellbeing.
Recognising that sustainability encompasses more than environmental issues, NVU promotes equality, equity, diversity and wellbeing as central pillars of institutional culture. NVU ensures inclusive access to education, supports research and initiatives that advance social justice, and fosters a supportive and healthy community.
The policy was developed by the Strategic Development and Internationalization Committee of the university, with the involvement of the university community. Identifying sustainability as one of the strategic priorities of the university, strategic development and internationalization committee oversees implementation of the university sustainability policies and practices and develops recommendations for further improvements.
